The new project site just off the high street and near Kew bridge looks out on to Brentford and Lots aits. This is an interesting one due to the dichotomy of its situation upstream from the grand Syon estate and the faceless new Brentford dock developments, downstream from Strand on the Green, overlooked by the towerblocks of the Green Dragon estate, on the site of an old gasworks with practically a whole village illegally moored at its edge.
A view of the aits from the park
Approach to the park from the river- you can't actually see the park from the river, it is just behind the island seen in the video. The aits were originally constructed to screen the gasworks from Kew Palace on the otherside of the river.
This is the first my overlays in Illustrator, I usually use photoshop so this has been quite a challenge. This one shows interesting historical aspects of the site. If you can make it out, the pink one shows the site of the old Royal brewery, the turquoise outline shows the site of the gas works and the the purple line leading to the ait shows where there were the 'Swan steps' which lead to a river crossing to a 'notoroius pub' on the ait. I'm yet to find out why it was notorious! It closed in 1796.
