Canal Research

Our first project for the second year is all about canals.  We were lucky enough to be able to research canals and habitats which has opened up a whole can of worms for me about how important it is for the landscape architect to understand issues of biodiversity and ecological conservation/protection/preservation, not only at the local scale but national and even international.   Here is a slideshow about the South East Ecological Network, a blueprint for the preservation of a network of natural habitats in the south east of england that are vital for the movement of flora and fauna.  If broken this network would not only see flora and fauna threatened within the rural environment but also in urban cities and towns, whose green spaces are reliant upon their rural counterparts.

Further to the South East Ecological Network Directive there are also wider UK and European Ecological directives  that emphasise the importance of awareness and communication between
professional bodies such as conservationists, scientists, landscape architects and architects to enable the preservation of biodiversity for the future.  See the links list Ecological Directives below.
