We've been doing a bit of Landscape Architectural History so here's some photos from my visit to Stourhead, where the Classical revival lived on in the 18th century grounds of the Neo-Palladian Manor. At the heart of the gardens is a large man-made lake with a path circulating around this, with follies leading from it - a common theme found at many of other gardens of the English Landscape movement, for example at Chiswick and Syon House. I think its exceptionally successful here though, due to the elements of surpsrise that are upheld when you walk around aresult of the composition of the planting, and the rather hilly terrain, so one experiences many different awe inspiring views as you walk through it. I think it helps visiting it on a quiet, sunny weekday afternoon, as you feel like you're the only ones there and its really peaceful.
